Tucked away on Hudson Street in Northborough is a real hidden gem alongside the Assabet River. The Yellick Conservation area provides plenty of room for parking and allows access to popular fishing spots along the river. This parcel is adjacent to newer trails that connect east towards Boundary Street and south, across Route 20, behind Algonquin Regional High School, all the way to Bartlett Street.
Hikers will be in for a real treat along the Coyote Trail. This path initially runs west behind some houses on Hudson Street before a bridge allows crossing to the south side of the river. The next portion of the trail runs through a pine forest on steep terrain that overlooks the Assabet. Eventually the trail connects to flatter land that offers completely different scenery.
The mix of landscape is unlike anything in the area, making the Coyote Trail a must for outdoor enthusiasts. A word of caution is in order, though. A portion of this trail is quite dangerous when snow, ice, or fallen leaves cover the ground. During such times, it is definitely not a place for kids, and not very safe for adults either. Biking is not an option regardless of the time of year.
From the Hudson Street trailhead, Coyote runs about a half-mile before connecting with the new, one-plus mile Birdsong Trail that runs almost all the way to Route 20 before intersection with the new Old Farm Trail. These trails meet at a particularly scenic spot where a wooden bridge crosses a stream.
Old Farm begins on Route 20 at 413 Main Street and runs north, northeast for just over a mile to Boundary Street. The connection to Birdsong is located just a short distance from the Main Street trailhead. For a trail map of this entire area click here.
Across Route 20 and just a little bit west, the new Stirrup Brook Trail twists and turns south for nearly two miles before ending on Bartlett Street, a few hundred feet east of Lyman Street. There is a trail spur that runs west up to a southern parking lot at the high school.
Both Old Farm and Stirrup Brook are excellent for mountain biking. The riding is fine on Birdsong but not as nice.
