DUDLEY CONSERVATION LAND TRUST
Tufts Branch Valley Wildlife Sanctuary
Our Flagship property, these 81.3 acres are a combination of early succession forest, mature upland forest, wetlands and meadows. The property, accessible from Healy Road in Dudley, was purchased in February 2008 from a group of real estate developers via a successful $250,000 capital campaign that involved grants from three foundations; a grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts‘ Conservation Partnership program as well as substantial financial support from the local community. In March 2010, the sanctuary was expanded via the purchase of 6.0 acres of landlocked upland forest known as “Parcel M.” Access to the Tufts Branch Wildlife Sanctuary is made easy via a gravel parking area at the Healy Road trailhead and an informational kiosk built by Charles Perzanowski is available for hikers.
Most recently, the sanctuary is benefiting from 60’ of stonewall restoration work along Healy Road by Jason Hall and funded by the Janet Malser Humanities Trust. We are quite proud of our trails and boardwalks, and have more trails in progress.

Keekamoochaug Wildlife Sanctuary
6.7 acres donated by long-time Dudley residents Prescott and Florabeth Grout in 2007. This property is accessible from Healy Road in Dudley. Recent improvements include a granite & wood sign and a 40’ stone wall constructed by Jason Hall via assistance from a grant obtained by the Janet Malser Humanities Trust. The Grouts wanted the land to a haven for wildlife and chose the name - Keekamoochaug Wildlife Sanctuary in honor of the Native Americans that lived in the area. The property offers a rich forest canopy with ash, maple and black cherry; seasonal streams and a well that is capped with a plaque honoring the Grouts. Includes a trail that connects to the boardwalk entrance of the Tufts Branch Wildlife Sanctuary. (See below.)
Tavormina Land
This 2.44 acre parcel of land just north of Peter Pond, and part of the never developed Hiland Park subdivision, was donated by Thomasine Tavormina in 2007 in memory of her parents, Thomas and Rochelle Jedrzynski. The land features scenic views and pristine forest habitat, and was the first step in establishing a green/wildlife corridor on the eastern side of Dudley. (See Hiland Park/Slater Woods.)
Leovich Landing
Leovich Landing is 4.1 acres at 52 Dudley Road in Oxford where the road crosses the French River. It is one of the few places where a public road, the proposed French River Greenway route and a paddling access point are co-located. The property is named after Peter Leovich, the prior owner of the property, who agreed to sell us this valuable parcel at a bargain sale of $63,000. The acquisition of Leovich Landing had strong support of the Dudley, Oxford and Webster communities as well as the Town of Oxford, who donated $5,000. Leovich Landing is managed by the French River Connection and in 2010 was readied for public access via a gravel parking area capable of holding 8 cars and an improved launching area for canoes and kayaks. Although small in acreage, Leovich Landing is heavily used by paddlers for its convenient access to the French River.
SLATER WOODS
SLATER WOODS
Hiland Park/Slater Woods
Our most recent and ambitious project, the acquisition of the 68 acre Hiland Park property in September 2010 and the adjoining 74 acre Slater Woods property in February 2011 has resulted in the creation of a 1.5 mile long green/wildlife corridor from Mass Audubon holdings along Dudley-Oxford Road in Dudley to Peter Pond in Dudley. The total cost to acquire these lands were $150,000, and again we are indebted to the local community and grant foundations for their benevolence. We also want to thank the land owners for selling us these properties to include Barbara Schlichter (Hiland Park) as well as Bob Zipf and Joyce Harrington (Slater Woods). Lastly, we wish to thank Charlie Wyman of the Massachusetts Audubon Society for his technical assistance and Brandon Kibbe of the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game for working tirelessly to secure a conservation restriction for Slater Woods. In the coming months, we will work with our conservation partners in designing & constructing a trail system that can be used by the public. A formal dedication of Hiland Park and Slater Woods is planned for 2012.

Thirty miles south of Boston and just off Taunton Street, Wrentham State Forest is laced with innumerable hiking and biking trails. This condensed forest, described by the state as "minimally developed," is bordered by Rte. 495 and Madison Street and is open from dawn to dusk. Trails are unmarked and sometimes require some maneuvering. On Saturdays during fall deer-hunting season, the trails are closed. Hunting is forbidden on Sundays.

CANOE RIVER GREENBELT AND RECREATION AREA
Canoe River Greenbelt and Recreation Area
Directions: East Main Street (Rt. 123) across from Burt
Street.
Parking: 2 parking spaces on East Main Street in front of the sign
History of Property: The property was formerly owned by George F. Davey of Abington and Terry L. Edwards of Avon. In 1985, all 69 acres were sold to the Subon Company. The property was then divided into seven lots and individual parcels with frontage on East Main Street were sold for industrial/
commercial uses.
The back land contained approximately 43 acres and was identified by the Land Acquisition Committee (now the Open Space Committee) as an area of environmental significance due to the proximity to the town wells and the Canoe River. The Conservation Agent obtained an Urban Self-Help Grant for the purchase. The new town property was then split into two parcels.
One parcel (Lot 1-24 acres), closest to the Canoe River, is managed by the Conservation Commission for wildlife habitat and passive recreation. The other parcel (Lot 2-18 acres), nearly all upland, is managed by the Recreation Commission and will be available for active recreation activities. There are unmarked trails open to the public.
Everett Leonard Conservation Area Directions: The main entrance trail is on Parker Street close to John Scott Boulevard. The Conservation Area is adjacent
to the Everett Leonard Complex (ELC).
Parking: On Parker Street or at the ELC.
History of Property: The ELC (9 acres) and Conservation Area (27 acres) parcels were purchased by the town in 1979 from Texas Instruments through a Land and Water Conservation grant. The swimming pool, pavilion and ballfields were already in existence at the ELC.
The trail (dotted line below) runs through woods and a small field. There are two old trails that run through the wetland to the ELC but the boardwalks need to be reconstructed before the trail is re-established.
The Recreation Commission has worked very hard to bring the Complex into compliance for Accessibility issues and has recently created a new parking area.
JOHNSON ACRES
Johnson Acres
Directions: On North Washington Street, directly adjacent
to the old Railroad bed, is a small trail in the break in the
stone wall to access the property.
Parking: On North Washington Street at the Henrich Woods/Johnson Woods parcel or along the railroad line.
History of Property: This land (50 acres) had traditionally been used as farm land, to raise crops, livestock and poultry. Remnants of old barns and livestock pens can still be seen in some places throughout the property.
The land was purchased by the town in 2000 through a Land and Water
Conservation Fund grant as part of the Canoe River Greenbelt project. The property was purchased for its wildlife habitat value and local cultural significance. Civil War re-enactments are sometimes
held in the field.
There is a trail and picnic area for residents to enjoy. Recently, the property has
received some letterboxes for those interested in a scavenger hunt!
ROSE FARM
Rose Farm Conservation Area
Directions: On North Worcester Street, the trail is located
next to house number 33.
Parking: On North Worcester, there is 1 off-road parking space.
History of Property: This parcel (23 acres) and the Solmonese school land were purchased with a Self-Help Grant in 1966. The Conservation Commission granted temporary use of the hayfields for soccer fields in the 1970s but all have reverted back to hayfields, currently leased by local farmers.
This area is a favorite spot for Boy Scout camping trips.

Bandstand Park
South Main Street, Assonet
The bandstand in Assonet was built along the Assonet River on the site of the former Green Dragon Tavern. Built by a WPA laborer during the Great Depression, it was intended in part to replace the stage that was lost when the tavern was demolished.
The bandstand is a well-recognized part of the town's landscape. It's home to evening concerts by local music groups during the summer, which often serve as fundraisers for various local organization. The Tuesday Club of Assonet's annual Strawberry Festival is held at the bandstand each year on Father's Day. The town Christmas tree is proudly decorated and displayed at the bandstand each December.
Central Park
Memorial Drive, East Freetown
Central Park began in the late 1980s as a single baseball field, Memorial Field, dedicated to former police chief Norman Allison. In the early 21st century, a cadre of volunteers developed the site into a multi-field complex with basketball courts and a walking loop trail.
Central Park has quickly become a popular recreation area in town.
Hathaway Park
Water Street, Assonet
Once the property of the Hathaway family, this park on the banks of the Assonet River features a playground and plenty of open space to run, walk, or start up a baseball game. The park is also home to the annual Independence Day fireworks faire.
Memorial Park
Memorial Drive, East Freetown
Memorial Park is a tribute to the men and women of town who have served in the protection of their community, both at home and abroad. The centerpiece of the park is a Vietnam-era Cobra helicopter.
Porter's Shore
Gramp Deane Road, Assonet
Over 10 acres of wooded conservation land on the shore of Assonet Bay provide ample space for hiking, walking, and picnicking. A single lane dirt road provides access from Gramp Dean Road to the bay for vehicles carrying canoes or other small watercraft. Fishing and swimming are popular summertime passtimes.
The Tisdale Burying Ground, a Revolutionary War-era cemetery, is also located atop a hill on the property.
Rezendes Baseball Complex
Narrows Road, Assonet
Five baseball, softball, and t-ball fields on a quiet, residential street were formerly the home to the Assonet Youth Sports Association, and are now used by the new Freetown Youth Athletic Association. A small forest and pond sit just to the east of the ballfields. Ruins of the former Crystal Springs Bleachery fill the forest.

Camp Titicut Reservation Trail
Camp Titicut Reservation is a small but scenic conservation area situated along the banks of the Taunton River. The name Titicut is derived from the Wampanoag Indian name for the Taunton River, “Seip-teih-tuk-qut,” which means “the long waterway used by all.” A Wampanoag village was once situated next to the river for access to the waterway and because the river was low enough to wade across at one point. Later, in the early 1800s, the Titicut area was the site of shipbuilding activities, and a number of schooners were built here and floated down the river during the high water of springtime.

War Memorial Park: River Street.
Built along the banks of the Town River as a federal Works Progress Administration project, the quiet park is the site of an annual peace day in September. It was a mill site from the 17th to 20th centuries, spanning iron works for the Ames shovel factory, as well as a sawmill, gristmill, shingle mill and even a pickle factory. A large boulder known as Pulpit Rock is a key feature of the park, and oral tradition maintains that the Reverend James Keith, minister of the First Church of Bridgewater, employed the rock as a pulpit from which he delivered the first sermon to colonists in 1663 under the Old Bridgewater Grant.

One hundred and eighty acres that surround Little Pond on the west side of Plymouth.
The park offers: four supervised beaches for swimming and wading; picnicking areas both up the hill and along the pond; paved walking/jogging routes; raw nature trails for hikers and birders; restroom facilites.
The best part of the year to visit is in the summer when there is some nice cool breeze to ward off the heat of july and august.
The springtime is very swampy and the pond area often overflows into the lower picnic grounds.
The brochures show trail-skiers in the winter and a frozen pond that is quite beautiful in its austerity.
to get there:
exit off route 3/ US44 on to Summer Street and head west about 1 mile and see the park entrance signs. Be careful when driving in the park because the roads are very narrow and joggers often use the edges of the pavemen

HENESSEY PROPERTY
Hennessey Property
For the past two years the Trust has been working with the Hennessey family to help them explore ways of preserving as much of their property as possible for open space, while also meeting their fiduciary responsibility to the family.
We’re very excited about this project, as it utilizes the Flexible Open Space bylaw to preserve as much conservation land as possible. It has been designed as a five building/ten unit development, built on only 7 of the 39 acres. It will be a low impact design, with reduced impervious surfaces and green building methods. Right now, the Hennessey family is working with the Planning Board to obtain approval for their plan.
The Hennessey family is to be commended for their dedication to the preservation of this important ecological system, and for designing a plan that incorporates preserving as much acreage as possible while still maintaining their fiduciary responsibilities.
BATES LANE CONSERVATION AREA
Wheelwright Property
The Trust facilitated the purchase of 47.6 more acres in the Bates Lane Conservation Area. The property was owned and farmed by the Wheelwright family of Cohasset for many years. The property consisted of three parcels along the Scituate Cohasset town line in the area of the Bates Lane. The land is primarily uplands and wooded.
The Trust submitted a proposal to the Scituate Community Preservation Committee to consider purchasing, with CPC funds, the 47 acres, and the purchase was approved at Annual Town Meeting. The CPC then applied for and received an EEA LAND Grant for $500,000 toward the purchase.
This brought the total conserved property in this forest to almost 300 acres!
